The first Biomakery of the Netherlands is opened at Koningshoeven Abbey
The first Biopolus BioMakery was officially opened and blessed by Dom Bernardus at the Koningshoeven Abbey & Brewery in the Netherlands.
On 15th October, 2018, at the Trappist Abbey Koningshoeven in Berkel-Enschot, the first Biomakery of the Netherlands was blessed by Abbot Dom Bernardus. This ecological water purification system purifies the wastewater of the Trappist Abbey on basis of an interaction between micro-organisms in the wastewater and micro-organisms on the roots of plants that form part of the treatment plant. The purified water is reused in the production process of the Abbey. The Biomakery is a promising example of a new generation of water treatment for the circular economy and the very first of its kind The Netherlands.
As part of the EU funded NextGen research and innovation project, the Biomakery will be used as a testbed and demonstration site for new business models and high-tech water circularity solutions.
